Florida Keys Recap: Day 2 of 4

This is the second day of our four day trip to Florida! We landed in Fort Lauderdale, drove to the Keys and Miami, then back to Fort Lauderdale for the plane back. Here’s what we did on our second day.

I invite you to read about our first day here

Leaving for the Keys

We woke up early to start our drive towards Fort Zachary Taylor Beach! After having breakfast provided by La Quinta Inn & Suites, we were on our way.

Although the drive was a total of four and a half hours long, it didn’t seem that way at all. We had lots of fun talking during the car ride, singing songs, and enjoying the view from our windows. We made a stop halfway as well to use the restroom, purchase snacks, and gas up the car.

We were minutes away from the beach when Valkyrie had an accident. We stopped by a CVS to clean up and change. This is where we got beach ready by putting on our bathing suits and sunscreen.

Arrival to Fort Zachary Taylor Beach and Lunch

When we arrived, we were told to take a space in the parking lot as soon as we saw one. This is because the beach gets incredibly busy. Luckily we found one near an entrance!

Before having some fun on the sand, we had lunch at the cafe located on the beach, the Cayo Hueso Cafe. See below for what we ordered!

After lunch, we explored the beach by making sand castles, building forts, and dipping into the ocean.

Turkey Bacon Ranch Wrap, Pepperoni Pizza, Cheeseburger, Fries and (not pictured) Mango Smoothie.

The Southernmost Point of America

While we wanted to walk to the Southernmost point buoy, we drove by it. There were lots of people there and Valkyrie was ready for a nap! It was still great to see it, and say we’ve been to the southernmost point of America!

Lodging

We stayed at the Bonefish Bay Resort. The resort offers a motel, RV site and family cabin rental. In addition, there’s a dock, pool, tennis court, barbeque area, and more.

We stayed in one of the motel rooms and I think it did the job as we only needed a place to rest. However, I couldn’t rest. I didn’t find the beds or pillows comfortable. Not to mention, I found a bug on the bed and several bees in the bathroom/kitchen.

Dinner

We had dinner at the Sunset Grille & Raw Bar, located at the exit right before the 7-Mile Bridge. The view was spectacular. We enjoyed the sunset as we ate, while overlooking the bridge and the ocean. See our ratings on the food below, and view the menu here

The venue is designed as a tiki hut, with a large oceanfront deck, while having a pool alongside the hut. There’s plenty to do there, so you’ll have to be sure to stop by! Enjoy a drink… or two?!

Baby Back Ribs with Mac and Cheese, and Cole Slaw, Pasta Alfredo – All so delicious! I’d visit again.

Back to the Motel

We returned to the motel to freshen up, prepare for the next day, and rest.
